Tibetan portraits - 20 people first time in front of a camera. Do people exist who never have been portraied by a photographer before? How do they react in front of a camera for the first time in their life? In the obscure monastery Tsome Ling in the backstreets of the tibetan quarter Barkhor in Lhasa, you will find hundreds of old people coming every day to pray, have some food and yak butter tea, and to seek community with others, from the early morning until late evening. Most of them never have stood in front of a camera. Therefore they do not have the habits western people have, since their childhood. They do not close their mouth to hide missing teeth. They do not smile to look attractive. Their faces show instinctively honest expressions. This portfolio are of such people. See how openminded and honest friendly they are! Their faces often pictures a long and hard life, from the time when Tibet was a free nation, until today, when the rapid chinese modernisation has changed almost everything in this laid back country. The skin of these faces also shows the characteristic structure caused by the low oxygen level in heights above 3500 m. Total portfolio: 20. |
