Garajonay - Europe’s last rainforests.
As few know,
5 million years ago, in the tertiaer time period, middle and southern
Europe, from Cornwall in England, to the today sunburnt Spain, Greece and
northern Africa, were covered with dense, damp rainforests. They were
different from today’s rainforests of, say Amazonas etc. Species like 10 m.
tall whiteflowering heath (Ericacaea) and 30 m. tall laurel trees were
common, and in the upper regions you could find special long-needle pines
that collected mist with their needles and converted it to “raindrops”,
bending their needles towards the soil. These forests disappaired with the
climate changes, like the cold glacial periods, except for the forests on
the northern slopes of three canarian islands La Gomera (Garajonay Reserve),
La Palma and partly Tenerifa. Here small reminiscents of these european
rainforest have survived, and are now UN-protected World Heritage Sites.
These rainforests are unique in the world, with their moss, swampy soil, and
troll-like trees and heath. In this portfolio I try to bring you the feeling
of being there, and being 5 mill. years back in time.
