"The fishermen from
Nazaré".
The Nobel Prize novelist Jose Saramago briefly mentions the fisherman from
Nazarè in Portugal in his novel "O ano da morta de Ricardo Reis".
When I had the
opportunity to be there, in 1968, I observed the very special culture,
costumes and way of living of these fishermen.See how the whole village is cooperating,
having three larger fishing boats, that could not be taken up to the beach. The
women are carrying the fish up on the beach, together with empty food boxes. The
small child, as well as the old man get their share of wat was found in the sand. Today
they have a modern quay and harbour, and the woollen folk-costumes are gone.
This is part of our history, and I am happy to share that cultural heritage with you.
